The Safari 4 Welcome

For those who have not yet downloaded Safari 4, you are treated to a video when you launch it for the first time. Here it is:

How To Make an Animated Video

So, you’ve probably seen my production, Ender’s Game in Under Three Minutes. But you’re probably wondering…how did I do it? Here’s a step-by-step guide on How To Make an Animated Video.

Step 1: Animate. What I Used: Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 for Windows (Free Trial) and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2008 for Mac ($129). OK, I used PowerPoint 2003 and 2008 to animate it because I did not have PowerPoint 2007. But play around with the effects, mix them together, add shapes and explosions…be warned though, that older versions of PowerPoint don’t have the latest and greatest animations and effects.

Step 2: Add Music. What I Used: GarageBand for Mac (Free on Macs). Let’s face it: GarageBand is the best free music-editing software, hands down. Drag in some of the pre-recorded loops and export it. Easy.

Step 3: Record. What I Used: SnapZProX for Mac (Free Trial). You could use Jing or Camtasia Studio for Windows, but SnapZProX has some nice features, like recording in HD and hiding the cursor during recording.

Step 4: Convert. What I Used: iTunes (Free). To make your video web-friendly, drag your finished video into the Movies section of iTunes. Go to the Advanced menu and select “Create iPod/iPhone version.” After the conversion is done, go to your Music Folder (Windows Vista: C:\Users\yourname\Music, Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Music, Mac: Macintosh HD:Users:yourname:Music) > iTunes > iTunes Music > Movies > and select the “.m4v” file that you just converted it. Copy it somewhere safe for the next step.

Step 5: Put Online. What I Used: YouTube (Free). You can also use YouTube or any other video sharing site. Upload the video file and share the link with the world!

How To Add Sites to Safari 4 Top Sites

Safari’s Top Sites feature is great, but what about customizing it to be your own? We’ll show you how to add your own favorite sites to the Top Sites page in this How To.

  1. Open Top Sites and click the “Edit” button in the lower left corner.
  2. Open a new window with the site you want to add.
  3. Drag the icon in the address bar of the site you want to add to the Top Sites page. You’ll see another website scoot over to make room for the new one.
  4. Click the “Done” button to save the changes. Close Top Sites and then reopen it.
  5. You now have your own site pinned to the Top Sites page. You can drag it around or delete it if you want to.

It’s that simple! We wish Apple would make the process easier, but there you go. You can get more Safari 4 Tips at Ars Technica.

Insult others with LMGTFY!

Has this ever happened to you? You’re sitting at your computer doing work when your friend IMs you and asks you a pointless question. How much is 5 euros in pounds? Where’s the nearest coffee shop? Or even…Did Andrew Jackson create the spoils system? These pointless questions are obviously very pointless. Enter Let Me Google That For You. When you’re friend asks that pointless question next time, head to www.lmgtfy.com and enter their question. LMGTFY will generate a link to give to your friend. When your friend clicks the link, they will see you entering the question into Google, except with patronizing captions at the bottom like “Was that so hard?” You can also check out what other people are searching at live.lmgtfy.com. LMGTFY teaches your friend how to use Google.
